Sega has unveiled today that the Virtua Fighter x esports Project is a refresh of the game company’s flagship fighting game Virtua Fighter 5. Titled Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown, the game is slated for release next week, June 1, 2021 exclusively for the Playstation 4 through its PS Plus service, where subscribers can keep the game for free for a limited time with no additional fees. The free period will be from June 1, 2021 (Tue.) until August 2, 2021 (Mon.). As long as the game is downloaded during this period, it can still be played after the end date, as Sega confirmed.
The Legendary Pack will also be available for purchase and brings a range of features, including character customization, together with character skins from the original Virtua Fighter 1 game. Also, Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown main game & DLC Pack, which contains both the original game and DLC as a set geared towards PS Plus non-subscribers, will also be available.
Co-developed by Sega AM2 and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, included in this new version is a graphical overhaul of the game using the Dragon Engine from the Yakuza series. Enhancements also include esports-style tournament features that follow the double elimination rules with up to 16 players. A spectator mode has also been added for those who want to watch matches in real time.
Ultimate Showdown is also slated for an arcade release in Japan on June 6, 2021, with an upcoming pro-tour that has yet to be announced in detail.
Virtua Fighter 5 is the fifth installment of Sega’s fighting game franchise. The game was released in 2006 for the arcade, and subsequently for the Playstation 3 (with its Version B Revision). Version C was released in the arcades in 2007 and was also ported to Xbox 360 in the same year. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown was released in 2010 for the arcades, and ported to Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. Ultimate Showdown was teased at Tokyo Game Show Online back in September 2020.
