E3 2021: Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin unveiled, cast and staff announced

At the end of their E3 2021 showcase, Square Enix revealed that Chaos is arriving. Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin has been officially unveiled to the world as a bold new take for the Final Fantasy franchise.

The Souls-like action RPG is being developed by Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo. The announcement trailer featured the story beats in in-game cinematics and a bit of the gameplay. The main protagonist is a Warrior of Light named “Jack,” voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda (Maou-sama Retry!, Gokushufudo, Fire Force), hellbent on killing Chaos (and actually drills that into us to the point that it turned into a meme already). He is joined by the light-hearted Jed, voiced by Yusuke Suda (Rodde Ripley in Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records), and the level-headed Ash, voiced by Atsushi Miyauchi (Mack in Megalobox 2, Cioccolata in Vento Aureo).

Combat-wise, Jack has two unique abilities in his arsenal, “Soul Burst” and “Light Bringer.” The former is initiated when the player has “broken” the enemy, turning the target into a crystalline chunk that Jack is able to shatter for an instant kill (as seen in the gameplay demo). Shattering targets allow Jack to restore his MP. The “Light Bringer” skills, on the other hand, are offensive skills that can easily wear down a target to “Break” status ready for Soul Burst. Additionally, a job system is also set in place that allows Jack to equip different weapons, like a sword and shield or a spear seen in the demo.

At the directorial helm is Daisuke Inoue, former lead planner of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and battle planner of Dirge of Cerberus. At the production seat is Jin Fujiwara (Dissidia Opera Omnia). Story and scenario will be handled by Kazushige Nojima (Final Fantasy VII), with concept, creative production and character design by Tetsuya Nomura. Joining them from Team Ninja are Fumihiko Yasuda (Nioh and Nioh 2 director), Hiroya Usuda (Hyrule Warriors director), and Nobumichi Kumabe (lead programmer for Toukiden series).

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin will be releasing sometime in 2022 for the Playstation 4, Playstation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The demo, set in the Chaos Shrine, is now available for the Playstation 5.
