City Hunter returns for a new anime film adaptation

The famed classic crime fiction anime, City Hunter, is making a comeback with a new anime film in the works. The new film will be produced by Aniplex, and animated by Sunrise.

The new City Hunter film will be set in present-day Shinjuku, and will feature the return of the eponymous protagonist, Ryo Saeba, and his partner Kaori Makimura. The theme song is a modernized remix of Get Wild by TM Network. The movie is slated for a Spring 2019 release.

City Hunter will also feature the return of its original anime cast:

  • Akira Kamiya as Ryo Saeba
  • Kazue Ikura as Kaori Makimura

The film also marks the return of Yoichi Kato as the director, who also directed most of the City Hunter anime episodes back in the 90’s. Yoichi Kato (Yo-kai Watch, Aikatsu!) will be in charge of penning the script.

City Hunter follows the story of Ryo Saeba, a private investigator with an obsession for the opposite sex. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump from 1985-1991, and was adapted into three anime seasons, four TV films, and two OVAs. A Chinese film of the same name, topbilled by Jackie Chan, was also loosely based from the series.
