TOHO producer Keiji Ota revealed in an interview with Nikkei Style last May 12, 2018 that the company aims to make Godzilla movies in a “shared universe”. He mentioned that TOHO would rather make a “World of Godzilla” than a sequel to Shin Godzilla. Ota also said the inspiration came from the shared continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He added that this plan allows the studio to focus on different projects, which includes focusing on different monsters. TOHO plans to expand the project to character goods, games, apparel, and other forms of media. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. currently hold Godzilla’s merchandising rights overseas. TOHO aims to market overseas by itself. Shin Godzilla is a 2016 Japanese Godzilla film produced by TOHO and Cine Bazar. It’s the latest Godzilla film by TOHO after the 2004 Godzilla: Final Wars. The film earned $75.6 million during its box office screening in Japan last July 2016. Funimation screened it in theaters in North America in October 2016.
