In a surprise announcement, Nintendo has confirmed that a new Super Mario film is in the works!

The upcoming film is still in its planning stages, with Illumination Entertainment responsible for the animation. The said studio was responsible for the box office film series Despicable Me and its spin-off Minions. Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri will be co-producers of the said animated film.

Reuters indicated that the Mario film will be distributed by Universal, per the confirmation of Nintendo of Japan President Tatsumi Kimishima.

This is Nintendo’s second foray into the big screen, after the release of the critically-panned, live-action Super Mario Bros. in 1993, topbilled by Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper.
